This Sketch has a fascinating history. The designs were exhibited at the Royal Academy Exhibition in 1907: Seremban Church, Straits Settlement, Malaysia,
It was mentioned in The International Studio, 1907 and described as:
"In some recent work by Mr William Glasby may perhaps be discerned traces of the influence of Mr Henry Holiday, with whom he was for a period associated."
In 2021 we were informed by David Low that the church burned down in 1967. Only small parts of the bottom of the original Windows survived. These were re-installed at the Altar when the church was rebuilt. The Windows were donated by Justice Coates. In the John Collins’ archive there is a cartoon for another Window, dated 1910. We do not know if this new commission was taken up because the church records were lost in a fire of 1967.
The Work:- Two Lights with Tracery over.
Date:- 1910.
Location:- Not known.
Subjects:- Not known.
Inscription:- Tracery:- “Moved with compassion”.
Dedication:- “Boy Scouts of America. 1910.
Back of the cartoon/sketch has Glasby’s Putney address.
Note:- The dedication conflict’s with Log 156 (Grace Episcopal, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA) regarding Scouting.
All church records were destroyed in 1967 when the church was burnt. It was rebuilt the same year and the bottom part of the window lights are installed at the alter.
With thanks to David Low for data supplied during 2021.
However, an article dated ??? in “Studio–Talk” (p 64), shows a picture of Glasby’s work at the church, which carries a memorial inscription:-
“To the Glory of GOD and in loving memory of JAMES COATES, the ? of William J Coates. 19??”.
Also the Work is much curtailed compared to the cartoon/sketch in the Collins; archive. This is the part of the work that was placed in the new Church.
David Low has no knowledge of this Work at his church.
These two beautiful photographs were sent to us by David Low.
