Old Grammar School, Abingdon, Berks.

The Work:- 3 Heraldic Windows of 4 shields each.

Date:- c1912.

Location:- Roysse Room

Subject:- Armorial shields of Old Abingdonians.

Inscription:- None.

Dedication:- None.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………...

Sarah Wearne tells us the photographs are from Abingdon Guildhall of the heraldic windows in the Roysse Room, which was Abingdon School's schoolroom from 1563 to 1870. There appears to be black tape on some of the windows.

All the men featured are Old Abingdonians but there is no dedication or explanation. Nothing appears to be known about their commissioning nor about when they were installed but the understanding is that they must have been part of the restoration of the schoolroom that was undertaken in 1911. Pevsner attributes the armorial glass to Kempe. Certainly the windows on the other side are by Kempe but these are completely different.

I do not have a cartoon for the work.

Info taken from article:- Donald Green, Dennis Hadley and Joan Hadley, “The life and

work of William Glasby (1863 – 1941)”, The Journal of Stained Glass, vol xxxii (2008),

91 – 106.

Pevsner attributes these to Kempe. However, another adjoining heraldic window of 4 shields are definitely by Kemp and completely different in style to Glasby’s.

Glasby’s name does not appear.
